Production of unique, airtight bioreactor cap

2023. March 23. | Kategóriák: |

The task

  • Preparing custom-made, airtight caps for bioreactors
  • Filaments used: Filaticum Antistatic, Filaticum PLA Advanced

Bioreaction.tech Ltd., a biological research company, is experimenting the growth of different algae species. Their idea was to monitor different parameters in a laboratory scale bioreactor. To do this, they needed an airtight reactor with a cap in which various sensors and tubes could be introduced. The cap required a unique design, because its geometry is constantly changing during the experiments. To prepare the cap, 3D printing has been proven the best and most economical solution.

The challenge

  • Construction of airtight, unique caps
  • Depending on the used measuring instruments, different sizes and numbers of wholes must be made on the cap
  • The caps must be airtight around the inserted pipes and sensors

The solution of Filaticum
After creating the 3D printing design of the cap, it was printed using Filaticum PLA Advanced filament. This filament was recommended for its higher heat resistance and higher mechanical strength. Custom grommets had to be manufactured around the introduced wires and tubes, keeping in mind the airtight closability and the possibility of replacing the devices. Vacuum moulding from silicone was found to be the optimal solution, and the moulding tools used were also 3D printed. For this part of the task, Filaticum Antistatic was used as it has good mould release properties, which is a key factor in the release of moulded silicone.

The result
After 3D printing, we got all the sensors and tested the air sealing of the reactor caps, which performed well. Based on the customer’s feedback, the caps worked well: they are easy to use and provide the airtight sealing required for the accuracy of the experiments. For further experiments, this process can be repeated to produce new caps quickly and cost-effectively.In this project, 3D printing, which is ideal for unique, low-volume production, combined with another technology, provided the best solution to our client’s challenge.
